New alumni scheme to link Welsh students with local role models

Schools are being encouraged to set up alumni schemes
Schools are being encouraged to set up alumni schemes to link students with local role models in their area.
The programme, which will be available to all school in Wales, will be intensively trialled in 10 schools across the Valleys Taskforce area. The idea of the scheme is to inspire comprehensive school students by linking them with former pupils who have gone to develop interesting, varied and successful careers; and to help them access advice and practical support.
Deputy Minister for Economy and Transport and chair of the Valleys Taskforce, Lee Waters said: “Children attending private schools often have a whole network of people outside of their school and immediate family who can help them to develop and progress their career ambitions. ....

Orford 17-year-old is among brightest young minds in north west

A 17-year-old boy from Orford was invited to an online celebration of some of the brightest young minds in the region thanks to his competition essay on the theories of quantum mechanics.
Thomas Shaw, who studies A-Level Biology, Chemistry and Maths, entered his 2,000-word essay on the fundamental theory in physics in the Pembroke North Essay competition
The competition is run by Pembroke College in Oxford, aiming to support and inspire the next generation of undergraduates as they consider their university choices.
Thomas said: “I found the event interesting and I particularly enjoyed being able to ask questions to students about life on campus within the current COVID-19 restrictions. ....
