After a year spent weathering pandemic-related lockdowns, pivoting to new virtual business models and trying to manage amid all the uncertainty, small-business owners are working with their financial advisors to navigate the challenges around the most recent restrictions.
While many small-business-owner clients are still seeking guidance on more immediate financial concerns, a sense of cautious optimism and the experience gained in 2020 are also giving advisors the opportunity to re-engage some of these clients in planning for the latter half of this year and in some cases, even further into the future. ....

While women have made strides in increasing their representation on company boards of directors in Canada in recent years, it’s a different story for people of colour, notably Blacks.
According to a report the Diversity Insitute at Ryerson University’s Ted Rogers School of Management published in August, 2020, Black executives are “deeply underrepresented” on boards and vastly outnumbered by other racialized groups.
Although there are no statistics on the number of financial advisors who serve on boards, the representation among Black advisors is minimal, says Michael Collymore, a certified financial planner (CFP) at IPC Investment Corp. in Ajax, Ont. ....

The economic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic has hit younger Canadians harder than other generations. That has required financial advisors to offer some unique solutions to help these clients weather the storm.
A Carleton University School of Journalism and Communication poll conducted last May found that pandemic-related reductions in family income affected Canadians under 30 years of age more than any other generation, with those aged between 29 to 44 being the next most affected. Similarly, a report that global consulting firm Deloitte published in late June found that almost 30 per cent of Generation Z and a quarter of younger millennials, aged 25 to 30, lost their jobs or were placed on unpaid leave in April or May – larger proportions than any other age group. ....
