Busy Independence Day weekend planned in Elizabethton


ELIZABETHTON — With three fireworks shows on different days in different locations, free music concerts, a 5K race, baseball, extended shopping in downtown stores, and a presentation of an old-time USO show, there will be plenty to do in Elizabethton this Independence Day weekend.
It all gets started on Friday, July 2, with the monthly First Friday events, then takes off on Saturday, July 3, with the Elizabethton Parks and Recreation Department once more holding its Independence Day celebrations at the Covered Bridge Park and the Carter County Car Club holding its weekly Cruise-In in downtown Elizabethton.
Many downtown stores will have extended hours into the evening on Friday. Some stores will have special sales and some will host artists who will be working on projects in the store. Other stores will have live music. ....

Mother of three wins Elizabethton poetry contest


ELIZABETHTON— The ElizAlliance recently announced the winner of its April Poetry Contest, which was held in honor of National Poetry Month.
The winner is Amanda Baxter, 31, a resident of Elizabethton and the mother of three daughters, aged 11, 5, and 4. She is a native of Oklahoma, but has been a resident of Tennessee for the past 13 years, where she is raising her girls, who were all born in Tennessee.
Baxter had some pretty stiff competition. Shanasha Acuna, president of ElizAlliance said there were 21 submissions to the poetrycontest.
The judges were Jilian Reece of Carter County Drug Prevention, Mary Ann Owen and Harley Williams, both of the Elizabethton/Carter County Public Library. ....

Elizabethton getting ready for First Friday on May 7


ELIZABETHTON — The first First Friday of the season in Downtown Elizabethton is set to take place May 7, with the emphasis on many different types of arts, from drawing and painting to weird art, chalk art, live music, theatrical performers and a lot more.
The event begins at 9 a.m. and will continue all day and through the evening until 11. Everything is free and open to people of all ages.
Roger Bailey is especially excited about the First Friday kickoff. Although he grew up here, he is an artist who is new to downtown. He and his wife, Abigail, have opened Birdhouse Studio at 429.5 E. Elk Ave. The studio is already open for business and will hold its ribbon cutting May 4. ....
