The melting snow and warmer temperatures are a sign that winter is winding down. We are also starting to experience potholes springing up in our roads and parking lots. While we always seem to complain about the condition of the roads we travel, there was a time when roads in the U.S. were in worse condition than they are today. Those poor road conditions were due to improper construction, maintenance and drainage.
According to the Cornell Local Roads Program, it was an association of bicycle riders called the League of American Wheelman who helped change the condition of the roads starting in 1893. By 1904, approximately 7% of the U.S. roads were considered improved, as they were graded and smooth. These improved roads were actually gravel! ....

NSF challenges Cornell to tame winter, natural disasters
Partnering with community organizations, Cornell researchers are developing and planning a hyperlocal weather forecasting system designed to improve winter-storm emergency response and enhance natural disaster coordination for New York state’s rural communities.
Max Zhang, professor in Cornell’s Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, will lead the federally funded effort this spring.
The work is part of the new Civic Innovation Challenge, announced Feb. 17, an $11 million effort led by the National Science Foundation (NSF) in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy and U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The four-month challenge seeks to empower communities to achieve necessary local weather and disaster solutions, so that one day such plans may be scaled up regionally or nationally. ....

In late October and early November, two of these weekly articles explained the difficult decisions that were necessary for our various highway departments to deal with snow and ice control on our highways, and some of the factors that lead to using abrasives or salt. Complicating this dilemma is a strong environmental movement to reduce the use of salt. I mentioned in the articles that I had attended a day-long workshop on this subject about five years ago.
A free webinar on Nov. 24 by Cornell Local Roads Program was an opportunity to check out any new updates on this. The presenter was Jim Craw, retired highway superintendent for the town of Manlius and the village of Fayetteville. ....
