On the initiative of President of Malta George Vella, the Conference for National Unity was held today. This platform for a mature discussion was organised through a hybrid event, held in two halls of the Verdala Palace and through social media.
The discussion was driven by a number of personalities from various walks of life including Prof. Carmen Sammut, Prof. Simone Borg, Prof. Andrew Azzopardi, Perit David Xuereb, Mr Mario Fava, Mr Reno Bugeja, and Mr Aleks Farrugia. Various individuals and representatives from non-governmental organisations and entities also participated.
In his opening speech, the President expressed his satisfaction that the very announcement that this initiative will be taken sparking a public discussion. Explaining his view that this will be a space where everyone can have their say, the President described the conference as the beginning of a process designed, first and foremost, to enable us to reveal a ....

President George Vella has unveiled a new national conference on national unity.
The conference follows on Vella’s pledge in his April 2019 speech upon his appointment as President of the Republic, to work towards the strengthening of national unity.
The conference will be held on 27 February at the Verdala Palace, with a panel led by Reno Bugeja, former PBS head of news and presenter of Reno Bugeja Jistaqsi; writer Aleks Farrugia; University of Malta pro-rector Prof. Carmen Sammut; Chamber of Commerce David Xuereb; Faculty of Social Wellbeing Dean Prof. Andrew Azzopardi; and Prof. Simone Borg. ....

Malta’s low number of MPs is akin to a stationary car that needs a push, said Prof. Carmen Sammut on a proposal to improve gender equality in the Maltese parliament.
The chairperson of the consultative committee that has advanced the gender equality quotas for the House said on TVM’s Xtra that Malta had been stuck on female representation for the past 70 years. “There’s no big difference if you compare the percentage of women in parliament in 1950 to today.” ....
