Carlisle City Council cracks down hard on roadside littering

LITTER pickers are painstakingly clearing more than 100 miles of grass verges around the city.
Carlisle City Council’s Clean Neighbourhoods team is expecting to collect a staggering 1,000 bags of litter from verges in and around Carlisle.
The areas they are cleaning include the A7, A595, A689, A6071, A6 and Carlisle Northern Development Route and various other rural roads.
To ensure the safety of staff members involved and other road users, temporary traffic management is in place.
The council is committed to keeping Carlisle clean.
Roadside litter continues to be a blight on the local environment and can have a lasting impact on local wildlife. Ensuring that people are aware of their responsibilities to the environment those that litter could face hefty fines. ....

A FORMER district councillor has blasted Cumbria County Council for being too Carlisle-focused.
Joss Curwen, who represented Broughton on South Lakeland District Council for nearly three decades, said projects in the south of the county are often over-looked in favour of those in the north.
However, Cllr Stewart Young, the leader of CCC, dismissed the claim and said his position was dependent upon support from councillors across Cumbria - support that, he says, is dictated by policies not being too focused on any one area.
Anything they want at Carlisle, they seem to get, and it’s not good enough for people down in the south of the county, said Mr Curwen, who represented the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats, and also sat as an independent. ....

Carlisle City Council seeks view on new Air Quality Plan

MEASURES to improve air quality in Carlisle have been set out in a new plan.
Carlisle City Council is urging people to share their views on the Air Quality Action Plan before January 11.
The new draft plan, which replaces an action plan from 2012, looks at the likely causes of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and details 12 measures that are expected to reduce levels over the next five years.
The council s priorities are to improve traffic flow at the Bridge Street junction and reduce the number of vehicles stopping at the pedestrian crossing, to continue to progress the southern bypass project and for planners to ensure air quality implications are considered within the planning process. ....

Successful apprentices play major role on Cumbria's roads

YOUNG people who joined Cumbria County Council as highways apprentices have moved on to full time jobs with the authority.
The apprentices have all been recognised for their hard work and offered permanent posts with Highways Teams, who maintain the county’s road network.
The county council’s apprenticeship scheme underlines the authority’s commitment to investing in training for young people and Cumbria is reaping the benefits of effectively ‘growing its own’ talent.
