Net zero emissions must be reached before 2030 for 2°C target, new analysis says

12 April 2021
Calculations of global carbon budgets have underestimated potential increases in global temperatures, and the world will have to dramatically accelerate its decarbonisation efforts, a new analysis of climate projections has argued.
According to a new briefing note published by the  National Centre for Climate Restoration, also known as Breakthrough, carbon budgets calculated by authorities like the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) are virtually meaningless due to a failure to adequately account for feedback effects, and are likely to lock in higher temperature increases.
The paper paints a grim picture of the chances to achieve global warming limits enshrined in the Paris Agreement, in which countries agreed to goals of limiting warming to no more than 2°C above pre-industrial levels, and striving to limit to no more than 1.5°C. ....

Doubling uptake of wind and solar power could set up Australia for net zero emissions by 2040

Last modified on Tue 16 Mar 2021 12.32 EDT
Australia could wipe out 80% of its greenhouse gas emissions – all of those from fossil fuel energy – in two decades by doubling the pace at which solar and wind power is being rolled out, academic analysis suggests.
The paper by Australian National University engineering researchers found that at the current rate Australia would not reach net zero emissions until well after 2050, the date by which Scott Morrison says he would “preferably” like to get there.
Australia installed about seven gigawatts of renewable energy in 2020, continuing a trend in which new clean energy generation roughly equivalent to that produced by a large coal-fired plant is added each year. ....

Nationals' push to carve farming from a net-zero target is misguided and dangerous

Prime Minister Scott Morrison might be warming to the goal of net-zero emissions by 2050, but federal Nationals leader Michael McCormack has thrown a spanner in the works by suggesting agriculture be excluded from the target.
On Sunday, McCormack told Sky News the Coalition government will not “whack regional Australia” just to meet a climate target. He went on:
There is no way we are going to […] hurt regional Australia, in any way shape or form just to get a target for climate in 2050. We are not going to hurt those wonderful people that put food on our table.
But the Nationals’ push is deeply misguided. It dumps the burden of emissions reduction on other sectors, and puts Australian farmers and the broader economy at greater risk of climate change damage. ....

Australia needs to stop thinking that setting a target of zero emissions by 2050 is good enough | Energy

Political parties have to tell us what they are doing to keep within our carbon budget

We need to change how we talk about climate change policy. No longer can we hand out pass marks for irrelevant targets that sound good but actually fail to prevent climate change. ....
