Federal Budget 2021: Australia’s green recovery failure costs jobs
THE AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT’S failure to fund a clean recovery from COVID-19 is a national shame and a lost opportunity to create jobs, the Climate Council said ahead of the Federal Budget.
Data from the Global Recovery Observatory shows that Australia has spent US$130 billion on COVID recovery efforts but less than two percent of that money has been spent on solutions to reduce emissions.
In contrast, Germany and France allocated 47% and 50% of their respective recovery spending to clean solutions.
“Among major economies and our strategic allies, Australia is right at the bottom of the pack when it comes to spending on solutions that reduce emissions, create jobs and strengthen our economy,” said Climate Council spokesperson and economist Nicki Hutley. ....

VIC Emissions Reduction Target Signals Climate and Clean Jobs Progress

will create clean jobs and investment opportunities in the state, but a higher target would unlock more benefits and better protect Victorians from worsening climate impacts, the Climate Council says.
Today, the Victorian Government announced an emission reduction target of 28-33% by 2025, and 45-50% for 2030 – as well as a plan for how to get there. Previously, the state had a 15-20% emission reduction target for 2020, which was met.
Climate Council spokesman Professor Will Steffen said the new Victorian climate target was progress, particularly in the wake of federal government inaction, but the state was missing out on even greater benefits that stronger emission reductions would bring. ....

Big emitting Australian businesses exporting their products to Europe are likely to face millions of dollars in new tariffs following last night’s vote in Brussels.
“Climate change is a global problem and everybody must share the load to address it. Right now, Australia is not pulling its weight and the Europeans are going to punish us for it,” said Climate Council spokesperson and economist, Nicki Hutley. ....
