COLONIE An electrical malfunction below the auditorium stage caused the April 1 fire that forced the closure of a building for Boght Hills Elementary School students in kindergarten through third grade, school officials said Friday.
No injuries were reported in the fire, which North Colonie Central School District officials said began after an armor cable below the stage became heated.
The district’s website said the building on Dunsbach Ferry Road, built in 1955, had undergone no recent work and its duct system had not been used in recent years.
Electric wiring and plumbing associated with a boiler system heating was routed under the stage floor to radiators in a hallway outside the auditorium. There had been no known problems with the heating or the electrical systems, officials said. ....

Nine teachers across the Capital Region, including three Schenectady City School District educators, earned a highly-regarded national certification this year, the state Education Department announced Wednesday.
The educators, joining 51 other teachers statewide, earned the certification through the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards, the culmination of a lengthy process that includes written reflections, videotaped lessons and examples of how a teacher responds to student work. Within the education field, the certification is often referred to as the “gold standard” in teacher certifications.
“To achieve National Board certification in the midst of unprecedented challenges the coronavirus pandemic has brought is a testament to the dedication these teachers have to their students and their profession,” New York State United Teachers Pres ....

Firefighters were busy putting out flames at Boght Hills Elementary School Thursday morning.
The fire broke out at the elementary school around 6:40 a.m., leaving firefighters busy.
“The first arriving units observed heavy smoke coming from the building,” said Colonie Deputy Fire Coordinator Michael Romano. “There is a cafeteria and stage area, and that’s where the seat of the fire was located in the stage.”
Romano says the fire left its mark, and investigators are looking into what may have caused it.
“There’s significant damage in the cafeteria and then extending out in the hallway. We’ve got smoke damage in about 75 percent of the building,” he explained. ....

Valentine’s Day is one of the most important days of the year for grade school students. After all, there’s nothing sweeter than passing out goodie bags and cards to your peers.
That’s why several local schools and districts are finding ways to keep the holiday, and its many in-school celebrations, going for students who opted for in-person learning this year amid the pandemic.
“I remember being an elementary kid and coming home with the big envelope that you made out of paper,” said Bob Kraemer, principal of Johnstown’s Warren Street Elementary.  “And you stapled it and filled it with all your Valentine’s Day cards. It’s just a tradition that elementary kids should have. And we didn’t want to lose it.” ....
