In recent years there has been an exhaustive study of red dwarf stars to find exoplanets in orbit around them. These stars have effective surface temperatures between 2400 and 3700 K (over 2000 degrees cooler than the Sun), and masses between 0.08 and 0.45 solar masses. In this context, a team of researchers led by Borja Toledo Padrón, a Severo Ochoa-La Caixa doctoral student at the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC), specializing in the search for planets around this type of stars, has discovered a super-Earth orbiting the star GJ 740, a red dwarf star situated some 36 light years from the Earth. ....

New 'Super-Earth' Discovery Could Teach Scientists About Life On Other Planets

There’s only one Earth, but scientists that scan the skies for alien planets have found plenty of “super-Earths.”
In astronomer-speak, super-Earths are bigger than Earth but smaller than Neptune. Newresearchpublished last week in the journal Science says the discovery of Gliese 486 b could help us betterunderstandour own world.
Trifon Trifonov, a postdoctoral research associate at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy, led the research team. His team uncovered a planet orbiting a red dwarf star about 26 light-years away, which is close by in the scale of the universe. ....

Nearby "Super Earth" May Have an Atmosphere Worth Studying


A newly discovered exoplanet called Gliese 486 b may be able to help astronomers understand atmospheres on other rocky worlds. The planet is approximately 1.3 times bigger than Earth with a mass that’s about 2.8 times greater.
It takes Gliese 486 b just 1.47 Earth days to orbit a dim red dwarf star that is approximately 26 light-years away from us. This means that it is the third-closest “transiting” exoplanet that has been found thus far and since the star is around 30% as massive as our own sun, Gliese 486 b is the closest ever world that whips around a red dwarf with a measured mass. ....
