Claddagh Club extends helping hands to local students through scholarships

IMPERIAL VALLEY â The Claddagh Club of the Imperial Valley extended their hands in friendship to five local high school graduating seniors by awarding them scholarships for their future college studies.
The Claddagh Club, also known as the Imperial Valley Irish American Club, has been awarding scholarships to local high school graduates almost as long as the Clubâs inception in 1997, according to Club President Kim Taylor.
âWe wanted to do something where students from the whole Valley would be eligible,â she said. âI know we still have teachers and retired teachers (as members) and itâs just a way to do something for young people.â ....

Calexico softball squad goes 3-0 for week

CALEXICO â The Calexico High School girls softball team just completed a three-game week with a sweep, Coach Jennifer Lopez reported.
Following a preseason loss to Holtville on March 23, the Lady Bulldogs bounced back Tuesday with a 7-1 victory over Palo Verde. Shanelle Gascon went 2-4 with a double, one run and one RBI. Jossie Hernandez went 2-3 with two runs scored, and freshman pitcher Victoria Vallejo went 2-3 with one run scored and one RBI. Vallejo pitched a complete game for the win.
On Wednesday, Calexico continued preseason play on the road against the Imperial Tigers. With the game tied 4-4 after four frames, Calexico broke the contest open with nine runs scored in the fifth and sixth, ultimately winning 13-6. Senior Azennette Lopez pitched a complete game for the Bulldogs. Liah Valdez led offensively going 3-4 with one double, two runs scored and one RBI. Independence High School had a higher graduation rate than Kern High District s overall graduation rate at 94.7 percent, according to the California Department of Education.
In comparison, Kern High District had a graduation rate of 90.5 percent for the 2017-2018 school year. According to CDE data, graduation rates continue to indicate an increase in disproportional academic performance between white, Black, Latino, and English learner students.
According to the National Centre for Education Statistics, in the 2017-2018 school year, of the 50 states where data was collected, students with disabilities were at the bottom of 4-year high school graduation rates by student group.
