Novel deep learning system can predict cardiovascular risk from CT scans

Novel deep learning system can predict cardiovascular risk from CT scans
Coronary artery calcification the buildup of calcified plaque in the walls of the heart s arteries is an important predictor of adverse cardiovascular events like heart attacks. Coronary calcium can be detected by computed tomography (CT) scans, but quantifying the amount of plaque requires radiological expertise, time and specialized equipment.
In practice, even though chest CT scans are fairly common, calcium score CTs are not. Investigators from Brigham and Women s Hospital s Artificial Intelligence in Medicine (AIM) Program and the Massachusetts General Hospital s Cardiovascular Imaging Research Center (CIRC) teamed up to develop and evaluate a deep learning system that may help change this. ....

New York Tech researchers receive NIH grant to improve the understanding of atherosclerosis

New York Tech researchers receive NIH grant to improve the understanding of atherosclerosis
A New York Institute of Technology research team led by Olga V. Savinova, Ph.D., assistant professor of biomedical sciences at New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYITCOM), has secured a five-year grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. The $1.8 million grant, which includes a first-year award of $342,675, will support research to improve the understanding of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and deliver a new treatment for heart disease.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 30 million U.S. adults have been diagnosed with heart disease, which also causes one in every four deaths. Researchers have long believed that atherosclerosis is a risk factor in predicting heart disease-related illness and death. The buildup of calcium salts in blood vessel tissue, kno ....

Inflammation of the brain gray matter decreases nerve-cell activity in mouse model

Inflammation of the brain gray matter decreases nerve-cell activity in mouse model
Damage to the brain gray matter plays an important role in the progression of multiple sclerosis. This study now shows that such damage can be caused by inflammatory reactions that lead to loss of synapses, which impairs neural activity.
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the central nervous system, in which nerve cells are attacked by the patient s own immune system. In many cases, the disease develops into a progressive form, which is characterized by a shift of pathology from the white matter to the gray matter, for instance to the cerebral cortex. ....
