COVID-19 infection rates are down from their record highs, and vaccination numbers grow each day. Are we rounding the corner in this pandemic battle? Keep an eye on the virus variants, says pandemic expert Regina Phelps. We may be on the cusp of yet another surge.
Medical experts are split over whether the variants will overcome the vaccinations and spark another surge. And you can count Phelps, founder of Emergency Management & Safety Solutions, among those who fear another surge is likely.
“The variants are doubling every seven to 10 days in the United States,” Phelps says. “It is a race. The more vaccines we get into people’s arms between now and the end of March, we have a better chance of curbing a substantial surge. However, I am deeply concerned that [surge] is going to happen.” ....

Three Harvard Professors Elected to the National Academy of Engineering | News


Three Harvard professors were among 106 new members elected this year to the National Academy of Engineering, the academy announced Tuesday.
Those selected included Dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences Francis J. Doyle III, bioengineering professor Donald E. Ingber, and Harvard Kennedy School professor William W. Hogan.
Founded in 1964, the NAE uses the expertise of its members to advise the federal government on matters related to engineering and technology. Election to the NAE is “among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer,” per its website.
Doyle, Ingber, and Hogan will join the Academy’s 2,352 other American members and 298 international members. ....
