GPICA holds public hearing on preserve project

The Greater Pine Island Civic Association held a public hearing on an application for a project called Pine Island Preserve and Matlacha Pass.
During its monthly Zoom meeting Monday, May 3, the GPICA discussed the rezoning and special exception application request for the project that calls for a boardwalk, kayak launch and small parking lot in St. James City.
TDM Consulting Senior planner, Veronica Martin and Tom Odom of Mitigation Resources, spoke on the behalf of the Conservation Foundation of the Gulf Coast.
“We know this project is controversial,” said GPICA president Helen Fox. “We know you’ll have a lot of questions, so I want to make sure we all listen carefully and respectfully to the presenters without interruption, and that the questions we ask at the end of their talk are informational rather than confrontational.” ....

Please keep our islands clean

As we often do, this past Sunday my husband Kiko and I took a walk in the beautiful Galt Preserve in St. James City. We love the serenity we feel there, and the communion with nature we always find. I usually take a bag, on the chance that we spot the odd piece of trash that needs picking up. This time we were horrified to discover that visitors had thrown garbage all along the trail. It indicates to me that the behavior of some people using the park is not aligned with the ideas of conservation of nature that are prevalent today, especially here on our beloved island. ....

Michele Murphy has always had a special love for wildlife, especially birds. The Audubon Society has a volunteer training program in Florida called “Eaglewatch” that caught her eye. According to its website Audubon.org: “Based at the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey, Audubon EagleWatch seeks information about Bald Eagles, active nest locations, and possible disturbances or threats to nesting activities. As one of the premier community science programs in Florida, EagleWatch works to protect approximately 40% of the state’s nesting pairs.” ....

Painted poles project is back thanks to Chamber, Trout

If you take a drive around the island, you may notice various hand-painted poles. Once upon a time, the Greater Pine Island Chamber made it its mission to round up contributing artists for the island beautification project.
Although some time has gone by, according to Chamber board member Cynthia Welch, Bonnie Trout is very interested in continuing the project. ....
