Bicyclists on 400-mile Erie Canal tour pass through Port Byron park


PORT BYRON —  Two weeks after his retirement, Daniel Guenzburger was in the middle of a 400-mile, eight-day bike trip.
He was one of around 300 participants in the 23rd annual Cycle the Erie Canal tour, in which people hailing from over 30 states trek across the state through the Erie Canalway Trail. They started in Buffalo on Sunday and will end in Albany. With the help of around 75 volunteers — 50 of which are also on bikes — those 300 participants ride through rain and more, with designated rest stops and overnight locations where they sleep in tents. 
Some cyclists could be seen Wednesday at that morning s rest stop, which was the Port Byron Old Erie Canal Heritage Park. Guenzburger, who lives in the Bronx, said he decided the tour would be a good way to kick off his retirement. He noted the participants get an incredible amount of support from the volunteers, but the participants are still taking that 400-mile journey by bike. ....

Erie Canal Cruises Will Reopen In May


Erie Canal Cruises is expected to leave port out of Herkimer.
According to the
Utica OD, since the beginning of the pandemic, this will be the first time that Lil Diamond II will leave port out of Herkimer. The cruises are based at Gems Along the Mohawk in Herkimer, but last season there wasn t any activity:
Off-season maintenance work on the canal came to a halt in mid-March due to the coronavirus pandemic and did not resume until mid-May, when the state’s Phase 1 reopening began. While some sections of the canal were ready to open by late June or early July, the Mohawk Valley section did not open until early August. ....

The Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor announced recently that 13 non-profit organizations and municipalities will receive grants this year totaling $108,787.
The grants will be used to preserve and showcase the canal’s heritage, educate youth and welcome visitors to explore the canal in their local communities.
“As the pandemic continues to present abnormal challenges it is especially gratifying to support diverse canal inspired innovations. We are so pleased to make these timely investments and contribute to the resilience of our canal communities,” said Bob Radliff, Executive Director of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor. ....
