CHANNELVIEW, Texas Investigators from the Harris County Fire Marshal’s office began looking Thursday into what ignited an industrial fire in Channelview the day before, along with which chemical was burning.
The fire started just after 4 p.m. Wednesday inside a small storage warehouse at the K-Solv facility before spreading to a second warehouse.
Mikie Sopczak, Director of Environmental Health and Safety and Security for K-Solv, said it happened while a product was being transferred between containers.
“This was not large tanks and large bulks,” said Sopczak during a press conference Thursday morning. This was small quantities.” ....

The fish are accustomed to relatively warm temperatures. However, experts say the sudden drop in temperatures during Winter Storm Uri caused major fish kill events.
“The numbers that TPWD [Texas Parks & Wildlife] does estimate is close to four million fish across the full Texas coast,” said Bob Stokes, president of the Galveston Bay Foundation, which works to conserve fish habitats in the region.
Temperatures tend to change a lot fast in more shallow waters, which is typically what you see along the coast. ....

Annual Texas Abandoned Crab Trap Removal Dates Set for 2021

Annual Texas Abandoned Crab Trap Removal Dates Set for 2021
AUSTIN Each February for 19 years, countless volunteers spend 10 days on the water along the Texas coastline searching the bays for abandoned crab traps left to foul shrimpers’ nets, snag anglers’ lines, “ghost fish,” and create unsightly views. To date, they’ve hauled off more than 38,000 of these derelict traps.
From February 19th through the 28th, Texas coastal waters will be closed to crabbing with wire mesh crab traps to facilitate the annual volunteer crab trap cleanup. Any traps left in bays including traps tied to docks will be assumed abandoned and considered “litter” under state law. This allows volunteers to legally remove any crab traps they find. ....

Galveston Program Turning Discarded Oyster Shells Into Treasure

1
Volunteers create new oyster reef and provide shoreline protection using shells from Galveston Bay Foundation’s Oyster Shell Recycling Program at Sweetwater Preserve in Galveston, Texas.
If you eat oysters in Galveston, there’s a chance your discarded oyster shells will end up back in the bay near the Texas city. Unlike throwing trash in the sea, that’s a good thing.
The Galveston Bay Foundation takes discarded shells from area restaurants on a weekly basis, and uses them to create “new” reused homes for marine life and lay down miles of shoreline protection for the bay. The foundation has been running its Oyster Shell Recycling Program since 2011, officials told Earther, when it was approached by a local restaurant owner who asked whether it would be possible to return the shells being thrown out at his restaurant to the bay. At that time, Galveston Bay had lost more than 50% of its oyster habitat from Hurricane Ike, which struck the region in 2008. ....

In a first for Galveston Bay, three groups have created a pivotal sanctuary for wildlife. Some 40 acres of new oyster habitat have been constructed in the Upper Galveston Bay/Trinity Bay, the Galveston Bay Foundation announced.
The habitat comes after a two-year closure to allow oysters to populate the reefs. Approximately 25 acres of reef will be open for commercial harvest, while 15 remaining acres will be preserved as a broodstock sanctuary reef to provide a sustainable approach to commercial oyster harvest, a press release notes. ....
