Coast Guard investigating likely fuel spill off San Clement Island, where aging Navy oiler was operating

The Coast Guard said it is investigating reports made last Saturday of two oily sheens off the coast of Point Loma and San Clemente Island, but has yet to release any details about a possible source of the pollution.
Coast Guard Sector San Diego did not acknowledge the possible spill off the island about 70 miles from shore until Wednesday evening. A whale-watching captain called the agency Saturday to report a “giant” oily sheen stretching for roughly 50 miles, and he later posted a video to social media of dolphins swimming through the pollution.
“The Coast Guard takes all reports of marine environmental pollution seriously,” said Lt. Ryan Szabo, incident management division chief, in a press statement release Wednesday after 7 p.m. “We thank all of the responsible citizens who reported these environmental concerns in a timely manner.” ....

U.S. Coast Guard officials in San Diego have yet to acknowledge a potentially large fuel spill off San Clemente Island reported Saturday by the captain of a whale-watching boat.
Domenic Biagini, owner of Gone Whale Watching San Diego, said he’d taken half a dozen passengers out near the island on Saturday when they spotted an oily sheen covering the ocean. He said they found the slick about 12 nautical miles south of the island, tracking the pollution all the way past an area known as Butterfly Bank.
“When I say giant, it was a minimum of 50 miles,” Biagini said. “We had 90 minutes of having to wrap our faces in sweatshirts because it was so toxic to breathe the air around us.” ....

In the waters off San Diego, the smuggling boats often cloak their cargoes of migrants under cover of darkness. Only the hum of the panga boat engines signals their approach to slumbering coastal neighborhoods.
But on Sunday morning it was clear and bright when Cale Foy spotted a horrible sight unfolding at the base of the craggy cliffs of Point Loma.
A 40-foot trawler-style boat had crashed into the rocks, spilling men and women and a teenager into the pounding waves and a rip current so strong that it was dragging some farther from shore.
Foy, a naval aircrewman on a hike with his family, didn’t hesitate to dive into the choppy surf. ....

SAN DIEGO The Coast Guard suspended its response Monday morning to an overturned boat near the Point Loma Tide Pools in the Cabrillo National Monument.
The Coast Guard Cutter Haddock crew relieved the Blackfin and remained on scene through the night to continue searching for survivors from the capsized, 40-foot trawler-style boat while the Coast Guard and partner agencies worked to verify the number of people aboard.
Thirty-two people have been accounted for. Twenty-nine people are alive, of which, five were taken to the hospital with one of the five remaining in critical condition and three people were declared deceased by the San Diego County medical examiner. ....
