LUCKNOW: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was on a visit to Gujarat on Wednesday to assess the impact of Cyclone Tauktae, lauded measures taken by the UP government in his parliamentary constituency, Varanasi, to battle the pandemic.
As per reports, Modi said, Varanasi did not go into extreme lockdown, but preferred to work on micro-containment zones and this helped contain positivity. Sources said, the PMO has been keeping a tab on Covid management and former bureaucrat and Modi aide, A K Sharma, has been camping in Kashi since April, when second wave struck.
Sources said, the administrative machinery worked overtime in ordering oxygen cylinders and concentrators, even as defence ministry set up a DRDO Covid hospital. ....

VARANASI: The Covid-19 pandemic has transformed life beyond imagination, blurred religious traditions and changed centuries-old rituals of performing last rites in the city of salvation Kashi.
Some members from the Christian community, who lost the battle to the deadly virus, are not burying the dead. Instead, they are adopting the Hindu tradition of cremating the bodies on ghats of the Ganga and taking the ashes in urns to the graveyard for entombment. Coffins are missing, funerals are mute and caution against Covid is the key for the Christian community in Kashi.
Talking to TOI, Father Vijay Shantiraj, secretary of Banaras Christian Cemetery Board, said, “Since the beginning of the second wave, at least six bodies were cremated and ashes taken to the Christian graveyard at Chaukaghat for burial. ....
