Goss Headliner was state of the art technology 40 years ago

Like branches of a swift-running river, two streams of blank newsprint merged into a single path, becoming a racing blur of color and black ink that disappeared into the metal mass of the Goss Headliner.
“I never get tired of watching that,” declared Lonnie Vincent, who has worked in The Daily Sentinel pressroom for 34 years and has been pressroom supervisor since 2007.
We were watching the press print The Nickel want ads one afternoon recently. It was several hours before the Goss would start printing the next day’s edition of The Sentinel.
The Sentinel you’re reading today is the last edition to be printed on the Goss, which is being retired after 37 years of operation here. From now on, the Sentinel will be printed at The Montrose Daily Press. ....

Sentinel to move press operation

The Daily Sentinel announced to employees this week that the company will soon outsource printing of the newspaper to Montrose.
The change is driven by Sentinel’s massive and aging Goss Headliner press, installed 40 years ago. Over the past several years, maintenance and repair on the press has become increasingly more difficult, with mechanical parts hard to find and qualified pressmen approaching retirement.
The Sentinel will now print five days a week at the Montrose Daily Press facility with copies delivered to the Sentinel building, then distributed to home-delivery subscribers.
In a memo to employees, Sentinel Publisher Jay Seaton said it was a difficult but necessary decision. ....

Woodland-based Tower Investments to buy Record's downtown Stockton facility

An agreement has been reached with a Woodland-based real estate development and investment company to purchase The Stockton Record’s East Market Street facility.
The Record building itself, along with its highway access and visibility, makes it a good match for his company, said Matthew Marks, a senior vice president of Tower Investments.
The 32-year-old company invests and manages a diverse, national real estate portfolio. It owns dozens of properties in California, including the Heartland Steel Manufacturing Facility in Lodi.
“Stockton has a lot going on,” Marks said. “We buy stabilized lease buildings and like the overall quality (of this one).”  ....

Times change, but the mission has not

The news last week that the building that’s been home to The Roanoke Times since 1914 is up for sale caused concern for many of our staff and readers in our region.
Since the conclusion of the sale last year of The Roanoke Times and nine other Virginia daily newspapers to Lee Enterprises, we have been at 201 W. Campbell Ave. S.W. as a tenant of our prior owner, a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway Inc., which retained the real estate. That is who put the property up for sale.
The Campbell Avenue structure reflects a bygone era, when more than 600 people worked to produce and deliver two newspapers, morning and afternoon, from a sprawling physical plant spread over two city blocks. Much of the building has been unused or underused in recent years as we have consolidated business functions elsewhere. We don’t know if we will be able to remain in the building as a tenant, as the Richmond Times-Dispatch did after its longtime home between Franklin and Grace streets was ....
