Report: San Jose Sharks Evander Kane files for bankruptcy, may opt out of NHL season

San Jose Sharks forward Evander Kane is $26.8 million in debt and recently filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, according to a report from The Athletic.
Kane, 29, was originally due $6 million for the upcoming NHL season, though that hasn t been adjusted for a reduction in games (there will only be 56, as opposed to 82). The filing further indicates Kane is unsure about playing at all in 2021: “Debtor may terminate his contract and he may opt out of the season, as allowed under current rules, because of health concerns given the recent birth of his first child. Should he terminate his contract or opt out at a point in the season, Debtor will not receive his salary.” ....
