The Boys and Girls Club began as an adjunct program offered in the city’s north end by the Community Council of North Kingston. Financed primarily by government grants for youth employment and without wider community support, its future was in jeopardy. This is when the Rotary Club of Kingston stepped in.

On the recommendation of a committee made up of past presidents, the Rotary Club of Kingston voted in 1990 to take on a substantial fundraising campaign to establish a Boys and Girls Club in the city. A little over a year ago, my club could not have foreseen that we would add 18 new members during 2020 and do so in the midst of a global pandemic. There are silver linings in just about everything.
At the beginning of that year, we were planning to celebrate a century of Rotary in Kingston with other Rotary clubs in the city when COVID-19 struck in March. We watched as service organizations and agencies began to shut down or go into emergency mode and knew a celebration was out of the question. But it also became clear there was a huge service gap and Kingston was in great need. ....

The Rotary Club of Kingston formed its Environment Committee in the 1980s under the watchful eye of Rotarian Larry Ritchie, who worked with the Ministry of the Environment at the time. Our club assisted in the delivery of the city’s first blue boxes and helped with the establishment of the hazardous waste drop-off site at the Kingston Area Recycling Centre. To reduce the waste of city-treated water on our gardens and grass, we helped with the city’s rain barrel project, promoting and delivering rain barrels to area homes to be installed at the bottom of downspouts. ....
