A special program to acknowledge the dedicated service and sacrifice of American veterans will be held by Kingswood United Methodist Church at Knopf Cemetery, located on the east side of Arlington Heights Road, north of Lake Cook Road on Monday, May 31. The program, which begins at 11:00 a.m. is free and open to the public.
The program will feature remarks by Lt. Col. Carlos Rodriguez, Staff Chaplain, Recruit Training Command at Naval Station Great Lakes, who will speak on the importance and sacrifice of the dedicated men and women of the U.S. Armed Services. ....

The numbers tell the tale for the upcoming BG Pride Drive, which should far surpass the 2020 edition – and last year s vehicular pride celebration was a resounding success on a sun-soaked Sunday to kick off June.
Just consider some of what s on tap in northwest suburb Buffalo Grove on June 6 for the 3-hour event that starts at 12 noon:

LaVera Hall, widely known as “Mama Hall” to the community around Southern rock band Wet Willie, has died at the age of 97, her family confirmed Saturday.
Born Mattie LaVera Richardson on Nov. 28, 1923, in Alberta City, Ala., she married WWII veteran Jack Virgil Hall on June 1, 1946, in Gardendale. The couple soon moved to Mobile, according to information provided by the family, and that’s where they raised their six children: Jack Jr, Jimmy, Donna, Cindy, Susie and Travis.
LaVera Hall, known by the nicknames “Bebe” and later “Nanny,” had a lifelong love of music rooted in the church: Her mother played organ and her father directed singing at Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Tuscaloosa. She recalled learning to play the pump organ at about 6 years of age “and having to stand to reach the pedals,” according to family information. Wesley Community Center, Los Barrios de Amarillo, look back on impact

With a combined 120 years of service, officials with the Amarillo Wesley Community Center and Los Barrios de Amarillo are looking back on the impact the organizations have made for not only the Barrio neighborhood, but on the city of Amarillo as a whole.
According to a news release from the organizations, the Wesley Community Center is celebrating its 70th birthday this year, while Los Barrios de Amarillo is celebrating its 50th anniversary.
“This anniversary makes us extremely proud and grateful. For the past decades, (the Wesley Community Center) and (Los Barrios de Amarillo) has stood the test of time,” the release read. “We have tackled issues on social justice, mental health, education, poverty, accessibility and more.” ....
