GFW completes Fairfax school sale | News, Sports, Jobs

FAIRFAX Gibbon Fairfax Winthrop (GFW) School Superintendent Jeff Horton said the sale of the former Fairfax Intermediate School to Retro Companies, Inc. of Burnsville was closed on Friday.
“We got it done,” Horton said. “There was lots of paperwork that took time getting it all squared away.”
Horton said the school property was sold for $53,000. Retro Companies got 35 acres of land, two gyms, an auditorium, industrial arts area, media center, cafeteria, offices and classrooms.
In addition, Retro Companies will replace gymnasium seating, upgrade locker rooms and a concession area that will be leased to the school district for $1 a year for 99 years, Horton said. ....

Gibbon Fairfax Winthrop senior Baleigh Peterson receives a $3,000 Minnesota School Board Association Student School Board Member Scholarship at the board meeting Monday. Peterson plans to study Agricultural Communication & Marketing at the University of Minnesota, St. Paul campus.
GIBBON Gibbon Fairfax Winthrop (GFW) school board student representative Baleigh Peterson of Gibbon received a $3,000 Minnesota School Board Association (MSBA) Student School Board Membership Scholarship Monday.
Peterson is one of just two MSBA scholarship winners among 50 Minnesota applicants.
“To say it was a challenge to name winners is an understatement,” said MSBA Executive Director Kirk Schneidawind. ....

The inevitable sign of springtime is here for the GFW Education Association – educators worrying about their positions being cut. We don’t want our colleagues to lose their jobs but our greatest concern is for our students. When cuts happen, our class sizes rise and they lose access to classes and programs that they love.
Our new course catalog was recently released. This catalog was touted as a great expansion of programs. The missing part of the announcement was that some courses would actually not be offered next year, with art and tech ed courses rotating on a two-year cycle. This creates confusion and instability. Juniors who were planning on signing up for these classes will never get another opportunity to take a woodworking, multimedia or advanced welding. Other students were hoping these changes would restore past cuts to English and science classes were also disappointed. ....

GFW OKs resolution for employee facing allegations | News, Sports, Jobs

GIBBON The Gibbon Fairfax Winthrop (GFW) School Board unanimously approved a resolution Monday to immediately discharge an employee facing allegations.
After 20 minutes in closed session, action came on a motion by board chairman Mike Kuehn, seconded by Jason Haas, for the immediate discharge of a tenured teacher.
Written notice of the action will be sent to the teacher, who will continue to be on paid administrative leave unless convicted of a felony, according to the resolution.
A media statement released Feb. 3 by GFW Superintendent Jeff Horton, read: “We have been notified that a teacher for GFW Public Schools has been charged with maltreatment of a child and 5th-degree assault involving an elementary student. ....
