Rural Affairs Minister Edwin Poots MLA recently visited Castlewellan Forest Park to view the progress of work underway in the Bothy Yard and Arboretum with grant funding of £500,000, awarded to Newry, Mourne and Down District Council (NMDDC), from the Rural Tourism Scheme of DAERA’s Rural Development Programme 2014-2020.
 
 
Steeped in history and heritage, this funding provides an excellent opportunity to invest in the natural landscape of the arboretum, which boasts one of the greatest collection of trees in Europe, and built heritage in the Bothy Yard.
 
 
Dr Sally Montgomery, Chair of the Task and Finish Project Board, and Councillor Laura Devlin, Chair of NMDDC, met with Minister Poots and provided an update on the work so far and plans for the future. ....

A £581,000 project to erect a sculpture at Davagh Forest trail has been given the green light at a meeting of Mid Ulster District Council s Policy and Resources Committee.
The sculpture is part of the Sperrins Sculpture Trail, a £1.7m three-council project spread across Mid Ulster, Fermanagh and Omagh, and Derry City and Strabane council areas.
75% of funding for the project will come from the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) Rural Tourism Scheme, with the council contributing £142,234 over two years. ....
