More detail needed on climate change strategy, Government told

More details are needed for the update to Scotland’s Climate Change Plan, the Governmnet has been told (Jane Barlow/PA)
The Scottish Government needs to address the “credibility and achievability” of its updated climate change plan with more details about how emissions will be reduced, the Environment Committee’s convener has said.
Opening the debate about updating Scotland’s Climate Change Plan, Gillian Martin said the committee welcomed the ambitions of the strategy but expressed concern that detail was “lacking” in some areas.
Government minister Ben Macpherson, speaking in place of Environment Secretary Roseanna Cunningham, who is unwell, said the plan “provides a credible pathway” to meeting Scotland’s emissions targets. ....

Shipments of goods from the UK to Europe have been held up for hours because of the type of ink used in a stamp, MSPs have been told.
Ian McWatt of Food Standards Scotland (FSS) complained about the inconsistency with which new rules, brought in at the end of the Brexit transition period, are being applied.
He said there was a “huge degree of inconsistency” in how border control posts in the Netherlands and France were treating consignments. ....

An SNP MSP who represents Grangemouth has labelled the country’s biggest polluter “misguided” after their billionaire boss refused to appear in front of MSPs investigating Scotland’s response to the climate emergency.
Petrochemicals company, Ineos, run by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, has snubbed an appearance in front of a Holyrood committee investigating the Scottish Government s proposals for responding to the crisis.
The company told The Herald that it had turned down the offer to appear before MSPs because it believes it would be “better served by involving the Chemical Industry Association who can give a broader industry input”. ....

Committee warns Scotland is set to miss climate change goals

SCOTLAND’S targets for cutting emissions are “fantastic” but the Government’s current policies mean the country is likely to fall short in achieving them, the UK’s Climate Change Committee (CCC) has warned.
The Scottish Government’s climate change plan aims for net-zero emissions by 2045, with interim targets that include a 75% reduction from 1990s emissions levels by the end of this decade.
Giving evidence to Holyrood’s Rural Economy Committee about the strategy, the CCC’s chief executive Chris Stark said the 2030 target would be “very, very difficult to meet” with the current policies.
While he expressed confidence that net zero could be achieved by 2045, Stark argued the Scottish Government needs more “tough” policies rather than relying on positive incentives to encourage people and businesses to change their behaviour. ....
