The court document scrolls on the screen like an eternal list of sorrow. The plaintiffs include Flint, Mich., the Navajo Nation, Nantucket, the cities of Holyoke, Fall River and Northampton, Her Majesty The Queen In Right of The Province of British Columbia, and the Stockbridge-Munsee Community Band of Mohican Indians, whose people now are in Wisconsin.
It also includes the cities of North Adams and Pittsfield among the other entities and communities ravaged by the opioid crisis and entitled to settlements from the Sackler family, founders and owners of OxyContin-maker Purdue Pharma. BCC Partners with Rural Recovery Resources


 
The training program was made possible with a $1 million Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) grant awarded to Rural Recovery Resources, a project created by the South Berkshire Opioid Consortium (SBOC). The SBOC consists of four funded partners: Berkshire Community College, The Brien Center, Fairview Hospital, and the Railroad Street Youth Project. BCC will conduct training sessions twice a year for the next three years.  
 
The BCC training curriculum focuses on increasing knowledge and awareness of substance use disorders, reducing stigma, and helping to provide better screening, assessment, and referral services in South Berkshire County. The two-hour training sessions, running weekly through June 15, are titled Overview of Addictions, Cultivating an Attitude of Hope and Curiosity, Addiction is More Than Just Drug Use, Multiple Pathways to Change, and The Invitation to Work Together as a Community.   ....

Fatal Drug Overdoses in Berkshire County Increased by 44% in 2020


In a recent interview with Berkshire County District Attorney Andrea Harrington, many topics were covered including a new report released by the Department of Public Health which found a sharp uptick in fatal drug overdoses across the state. According to Harrington, there was a 5% increase in 2020 across the commonwealth but in Berkshire County there was a staggering increase of 44%. Harrington said that in 2019, Berkshire County had 39 fatal overdoses and 56 in 2020.
Does the pandemic play a role in that sharp increase?
Harrington said the following (paraphrased):
Consulting with the Brien Center the answer is yes. The uptick is due to the stress of the pandemic and an interruption in people s normal community and support of mental health. People are very isolated and more people are using alone which is very dangerous. ....
