UK s poorly mixed cocktail of policy driving biodiversity decline, MPs warn
The UK is not treating biodiversity loss with the same urgency as the climate crisis, according to a group of MPs that have warned that current Government policies are inadequate to address a sharp decline in nature-based losses.
The EAC report also criticises funding cuts to public bodies and calls for the Government to increase Natural England’s multi-year funding
The Environmental Audit Committee (EAC) has published a report on the state of UK biodiversity in relation to existing policies. The report found that of the G7 countries, the UK has the lowest level of biodiversity remaining.  ....

Retailers asked to stop selling peat by end of 2021


“Through this, the demand for peat will be curtailed.”
Attempting to hasten the process, 27 environmental charities have written a letter to major retailers, warning sales of peat-based compost are damaging nature and contributing to climate change, and should be ended within the next 12 months.
They are challenging businesses to play their part in protecting wildlife and the climate, by committing this summer to ending peat-compost sales before the UK-hosted global climate talks in November.
In 2011 the Government set voluntary targets for retailers to end sales of peat-compost to the public by 2020, but 10 years on retailers are still failing to act. ....
