Durham scientist joins U.S. Senate field in North Carolina

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) A scientist and university administrator announced Wednesday that he ll run for a North Carolina U.S. Senate seat being vacated at the end of 2022 by Republican incumbent Richard Burr.
Richard Watkins Jr. of Durham said he s entering the Senate race in part to ensure “science is represented at the highest levels of our government,” particularly with challenges like climate change and COVID-19. “If we are to tackle the great challenges of tomorrow, then science must lead today, he added.
Watkins joins at least two other Democrats who ve announced their candidacies current state Sen. Jeff Jackson and former state Sen. Erica Smith. Smith finished second in the 2020 Democratic Senate primary to Cal Cunningham. Watkins ran a distant third to U.S. Rep. David Price in a three-candidate Democratic primary in 2018 for Price s 4th District seat. ....

Greensboro shooting on Mizell Road, investigation underway

A man is under arrest and charged for multiple shootings Friday.On March 2, 0fficers responded to an aggravated assault on the 3800 block of Mizell Road at 10:03 p.m. One subject, identified as Dari Meadows, was located with injuries from apparent gunfire, according to Greensboro police. Meadows was transported to a local hospital and was reported dead by Greensboro police March 9.Police said the shooter was Timothy Daniel Franklin, 24, of Greensboro. He was arrested and charged with assault with deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and placed in the custody of the Guilford County Jail on $200,000 bail. After Meadows died March 9, Franklin s charge has been upgraded to first degree murder and the case is now being investigated as a homicide, according to police.During the investigation, detectives learned Franklin was also responsible for a shooting at Elmwood and Cornwalli ....

A North Carolina A&T State University student wowed the judges on the season premiere of NBC s The Voice. Victor Solomon is a senior and made his debut in the first round of blind auditions Monday night.He chose to sing John Legend s Academy Award-winning song Glory. Monday night was the first time Legend has ever turned his chair for someone singing one of his original songs.He ended up choosing Legend as his coach.Solomon told WXII 12 s Briana Conner the song selection was the easy part, but it was picking a coach that was a much tougher choice. I definitely did think about who I wanted as a coach and how it would benefit my journey on the show. Not only who I am as an artist, but thinking outside the box and getting out of my comfort zone. For much of Mebane s history, the idea it could one day have too many apartments might ve seemed outlandish.
Well into the 20th century, Mebane was a mill town whose population never topped 3,000 residents. Sitting on the eastern edge of the Piedmont region, the city - pronounced quickly as “meb-an” - was a mile wide and a mile long, with a tidy downtown of brick warehouses, a movie theater, and shops serving as the community hub.
