(Gray News) - On this day 35 years ago, seven astronauts perished when the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded over Cape Canaveral.
STS-51L broke apart 73 seconds after liftoff when a booster engine failed. After an investigation, the cause of the explosion was determined to be an o-ring failure in a solid rocket booster. Cold weather was a contributing factor.
Four years before exploding over Kennedy Space Center, Space Shuttle Challenger creeps through the Florida fog on its way to Launch Pad 39A before its first liftoff on the STS-6 mission in 1982. (Source: NASA) ....

CNN was the only news network covering the launch live from Kennedy Space Center in Fla.
Their words were punctuated by long pauses of silence when the screen showed what looked like an explosion.
“Obviously, a major malfunction,” the NASA official said.
“They’re holding their breath just as I am sure everyone else is,” Mintier said.
The NASA official then says the dreaded words, “We have a report from the flight dynamics officer that the vehicle has exploded. … We are looking at, checking with the recovery forces to see what can be done at this point.” ....

It exploded 73 seconds after liftoff, claiming the lives of all seven people onboard: Gregory Jarvis, Judith Resnik, Dick Scobee, Ronald McNair, Mike Smith, Ellison Onizuka and Christa McAuliffe.
McAuliffe was due to be the first teacher in space. The New Hampshire woman had been selected to join the mission and teach lessons from space to children around the country. ....

Thursday marks a solemn anniversary for the space community. On Jan. 28, 1986, seven astronauts were killed when the Challenger space shuttle exploded shortly after launch.

Among those on board was New Hampshire high school teacher Christa McAuliffe, who had been chosen by NASA to be the first teacher in space. She was going to work on the crew as a payload specialist. The other six crew members were payload specialist Gregory Jarvis, mission specialist Judith A. Resnik, mission commander Francis R. (Dick) Scobee, mission specialist Ronald E. McNair, pilot Mike J. Smith and mission specialist Ellison S. Onizuka. ....
