Greg Bear’s The Unfinished Land is not your standard-issue fantasy adventure, even if it does feature a young naïf who travels across a magical, quasi-living landscape, guided by and encountering a range of strangely powered beings, all on the way to a series of revelations about the true natures of said landscape, beings, and naïf. There are also, to be sure, swords and soldiers, mobile forests, dragon-equivalents, a wizard, and conflict among gods or godlike entities for the highest of stakes. The quest-journey and the conflicts are mostly a framework to support something else, a kind of puzzle: what exactly is this land, what is its relationship to ours – the recognizably actual-historical world beyond its shores? ....

Every year, at least one or two new novels are released that broaden the size and scope of the series mythos. The latest of these novels, Halo: Point of Light, continues the story of the scavenger Rion Forge and the crew of the salvager ship Ace of Spades set up in Halo: Smoke and Shadow and Halo: Renegades, two earlier novels. As someone who recently finished the book, I can confidently say that it s one of the best Halo novels out there, featuring a riveting plot and some of the best character writing in the franchise. ....

Halo: Point of Light is the latest novel to expand on the lore of the Halo universe and marks the conclusion to author Kelly Gay’s Rion Forge trilogy. As the follow-up to Halo: Renegades, it certainly has a lot of ground to cover. However, Point of Light is definitely a step in the right direction for the franchise, as Gay does a superb job in bringing the universe to life and telling a far-reaching story.
