Thunder Bay police support Ontario ombudsman probe into closure of youth justice centres

Thunder Bay police chief Sylvie Hauth said she was formally notified of the investigation last week.
We will be participating with the ombudsman s office regarding their investigation, Hauth told the Thunder Bay Police Services Board during its Tuesday meeting.
The ombudsman s investigation was announced last month, when Ontario ombudsman Paul Dube stated in a media release that his office has received complaints about the lack of fairness and transparency in the two closures.
Concerns have been raised about a lack of notice and consideration for the vulnerabilities of the young people who were moved out of these centres – for example, whether their rights were respected and what planning was done for transitioning them to new facilities, Dube stated. ....

Over a month after the Ministry of Children and Youth Services announced it would be closing several youth detention centres across Ontario, several affected parties in the north are still left shaking their heads at the decision and wondering what’s next.
The closures came after years of significant decline in the rates of youth involved with the justice system, owing to the 2003 Youth Criminal Justice Act and the preventative measures it took to steer those aged 12-17 away from crime. In 2014, the ministry said that youth custody admissions within the province had dropped by 72 per cent since 2003, a trend that eventually resulted in many of the facilities’ beds going unused. The closures are expected to save the province roughly $40 million a year. ....

THUNDER BAY - The Ontario Ombudsmen announced it will be conducting an investigation after receiving complaints regarding the closure of two youth justice centres in Northwestern Ontario.

Project D.A.R.E and Nipissing Detention Centre will see their doors permanently close on April 30.
The two facilities are among more than two dozen youth detention facilities closing across the province as a cost-saving measure following multiple auditor general reports highlighting the large number of empty open and secure custody beds.
