Greece: Migrant accused of smuggling sentenced to 146 years in prison

A Somali asylum seeker has been sentenced to 146 years in prison for human smuggling by a Greek court, according to the European Council on Refugees and Exiles. Other migrants defended the man in court, saying that he started steering their boat to save lives after a capsizing.
On Thursday, May 13, Mohamad H. was sentenced in a Greek court on the island of Lesbos to 146 years in prison. The 27-year old Somalian is charged with migrant smuggling from Turkey to Greece.
The European Council on Refugees and Exile (ECRE) reported the sentence in their weekly bulletin and posted a link to their report on twitter. ....

The last flight carrying recognized refugees from the Greek Islands landed in Germany on Thursday, April 22. On board were 103 people, including several children.

Aid groups criticize completion of refugee resettlement flights from Greece to Germany

After the final relocation flight with refugees from Greek camps landed in Germany this week, German aid organizations criticized the end to resettlement from Lesbos and demanded an extension. Since April 2020, Germany has taken in a total of 2,662 people from the Greek Aegean Islands.

Europe warned against migrant 'hotspot' approach

The asylum hotspot system established under the EU-Turkey deal five years ago has failed, according to a German think tank. In a new report, it warns that the EU must not repeat the mistakes of the Greek islands.
New criticism has emerged of the hotspot approach developed by the European Union to deal with the large number of asylum seekers arriving on European Shores. In a paper published Tuesday (March16) by the Expert Council on Integration and Migration, a think tank in Germany, researcher Karoline Popp says the system has largely been a failure because it still does not provide a mechanism to relieve pressure on the hotspot locations. ....

Relocated: 116 refugees arrive in Germany from Greece

116 refugees who had been living in Greek camps flew into the German city of Hanover on Wednesday, February 17. The group was composed of 53 adults and 63 children.
26 family groups of refugees have arrived in Germany, the German interior ministry said in a press release on Wednesday. The 53 adults and 63 children have already been granted refugee status by the Greek authorities, continued the press release.
