At least 23 migrants have been found dead in a shipwreck off the coast of Tunisia. Seventy of their fellow passengers were rescued by the Tunisian navy, according to an NGO.
At least 23 African migrants drowned in a shipwreck off Tunisia on Tuesday, June 1, as they tried to cross the Mediterranean from Libya to Italy. 70 migrants were rescued by the Tunisian navy in the incident, the Tunisian Red Crescent humanitarian organisation reported.
The boat was carrying more than 90 migrants and had set off from Libya towards Europe, Red Crescent official Mongi Slim told the

A boat with 56 migrants on board was spotted off the coast of Cyprus on Sunday. The Cypriot authorities checked the documents of people on board at sea and then asked the group to return to Lebanon from where they had set off.
The boat, reportedly carrying 56 migrants (39 men, seven women and ten children), was spotted about 16 nautical miles south of Cyprus Cape Greco on Sunday, May 16.
According to the
Cyprus Mail, the Cypriot authorities sent two coast guard vessels to the area. One of the boats had nurses and translators on board. The coast guard coordinated their operation with the Joint Rescue Coordination Center. ....

The IOM has confirmed that at least 17 migrants are believed to have drowned in the Mediterranean on Wednesday evening. Their ship, which is thought to have departed from Libya, got into difficulty off the Tunisian coast. Two women were rescued.
The latest tragedy to occur in the Mediterranean was confirmed on Thursday (May 13) by a spokesperson for the UN Migration Agency IOM, Safa Mseheli. She said on Twitter that the boat had reportedly left Zwara, in eastern Libya, two days earlier.

A Somali asylum seeker has been sentenced to 146 years in prison for human smuggling by a Greek court, according to the European Council on Refugees and Exiles. Other migrants defended the man in court, saying that he started steering their boat to save lives after a capsizing.
On Thursday, May 13, Mohamad H. was sentenced in a Greek court on the island of Lesbos to 146 years in prison. The 27-year old Somalian is charged with migrant smuggling from Turkey to Greece.
The European Council on Refugees and Exile (ECRE) reported the sentence in their weekly bulletin and posted a link to their report on twitter. ....

On Tuesday morning 236 people were rescued off the coast of Libya by Ocean Viking, a rescue ship run by the SOS Mediterranee aid group.
The Ocean Viking, a rescue ship run by the SOS Mediterranee aid group, rescued 236 migrants in international waters off the coast of Libya on Tuesday, April 27. In a Twitter post, the group reported that the migrants, including 114 unaccompanied minors, were taken onboard from two overcrowded dinghies.
The struggling boats were rescued in international waters off the coast of Libya, 32 nautical miles from the city of Zawiya west of Tripoli.
A call was made from the two boats to Alarm Phone on Tuesday morning, which informed the authorities and SOS Mediterranee. The independent hotline aims to offer support for boats in distress at sea. ....
