Italian police have said that in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, on the border with Slovenia, some 75% of those that have gone missing are under age 18 compared with a national average of 50%. Their ship, which is thought to have departed from Libya, got into difficulty off the Tunisian coast. Two women were rescued. The latest tragedy to occur in the Mediterranean was confirmed on Thursday (May 13) by a spokesperson for the UN Migration Agency IOM, Safa Mseheli. She said on Twitter that the boat had reportedly left Zwara, in eastern Libya, two days earlier. ‼️ At least 17 migrants drowned off the Tunisian coast today according to two survivors rescued by authorities. ....

Adriana Homolova from the journalists collective Lost in Europe says that number is far too high. Between 2018 and 2020, more than 18,000 unaccompanied migrant children disappeared in Europe, according to data collected by Lost in Europe in 31 countries – including in the European Union, Norway, the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Moldova. Although the data was often incomplete, and in some cases absent altogether, the confirmed number of missing migrant children remains astonishingly high. According to the journalists’ partial findings, Italy ranked the highest in the number of recorded disappearances, with 5,775 missing migrant minors, followed by Belgium with 2,642, Greece with 2,118 and Spain with 1,889. ....

The Spanish rescue organization Open Arms said that it had picked up 146 migrants in two separate rescue operations. Meanwhile, the Tunisian navy said that it had picked up 25 from a shipwreck, with one person confirmed dead and about 22 missing. On Friday evening (February 12) the Spanish rescue organziation Open Arms said its rescue ship picked up 40 migrants after many hours of searching and encounters with a Libyan patrol boat. It happened last night #Med Rafel and his 3-month-old baby Moez, were rescued together with 38 more people in a flimsy boat on the high seas. ....
Nearly 1,600 unaccompanied minors are currently reported as missing in Germany. Nearly 1,000 of them were reportedly aged between 14 and 17 years and just over 600 children were aged 13 and younger. ....
