Watch: PM promises answers 'later' on Carmelo Abela bank heist probe

Prime Minister Robert Abela on Thursday morning declined to answer questions about the future of minister Carmelo Abela, who has been linked to a failed HSBC bank heist in 2010.
Times of Malta approached the prime minister, who has just finished a precautionary two-week coronavirus quarantine period, outside Castille as he arrived for work.
He said he was late for a meeting with the president of the EU council and promised he would field questions about the matter in a later news conference.
The prime minister has yet to comment on the matter, since
Times of Malta first revealed the police have opened an investigation into allegations linking his minister to the failed HSBC heist in 2010. ....

Dental students assisting with coronavirus vaccine drive

In normal circumstances dental students would be going about their day attending lectures or filling a cavity but these days they find themselves on the frontline in the fight against COVID-19.
Since February, around 80 staff and students from the Faculty of Dental Surgery have volunteered to administer the vaccines at the University of Malta.
Malta’s vaccination drive has been a top priority for the country, with over 430,508 doses administered so far and 147,667 people being fully vaccinated.
“Despite having daily dental clinical practice, lectures and upcoming exams, our students found the time to volunteer and give back to our country,” Nikolai Attard told ....

Malta buses introduce contactless payments

Passengers on Malta s buses can now travel using contactless bank cards, smartphones or smartwatches, part of a process aimed at making public transport more efficient.
Transport Minister Ian Borg said contactless payment will be accepted on all 400 bus routes. People will be charged the same fare as those using cash - €1.50 in winter and €2.00 in summer.
It will still be cheaper to touch in using a
ta
llinja card, which has reduced fares depending on the type of card issued.
“This contactless payment system will continue to raise the quality of service for both those who already travel regularly by bus a well as for those who use it less often,” Borg said. ....

Watch: Pro-choice activists stage sit-down protest at parliament

A small group of pro-choice campaigners gathered in front of parliament in a sit-down protest calling for MPs to debate a private member s bill to decriminalise abortion.
The group of around ten activists, carrying placards saying women should decide their own fate and my body, my choice sat in a row outside the Valletta building on Wednesday evening.
In an unprecedented move last week, Independent MP Marlene Farrugia presented a bill proposing that a woman is not penalised for having an abortion, which currently carries a maximum three-year prison term.
However the House Business Committee, which decides the agenda of the House, has so far failed to list it for debate. A request for abortion to be discussed within parliament s Health Committee has also been rejected.  ....

Letters to the editor - May 18, 2021

Carrier’s duty
I read most articles and follow other online items with interest. However, nowhere have I come across what the modus operandi will be once the airport and seaport gates are opened to all and sundry, except for the following.
Our health authorities state that incoming traffic will be obliged to show proof of vaccination or a test which is not more than 72 hours old before being allowed to enter Maltese territory.
Have I missed something somewhere? I would have assumed that our health authorities would have placed the onus for the above pre-conditions on the airline companies and the ferry operators. ....
