Smyrna's Freedom Playground creates fun, all-inclusive space

More than 100 people gathered in the rain at Lee Victory Recreation Park Wednesday to celebrate the opening of the all-inclusive Freedom Playground. The playground accommodates all ages and abilities.
Smyrna Mayor Mary Esther Reed thanked the community for its dedication toward the new facility. .
A true feeling of community is what made this project possible, Reed said. Individuals and organizations in our community have always been willing to step up when they see a need.
The playground is tucked behind the U.S. Marine Capt. Jeff Kuss Memorial, dedicated to the Blue Angel who died in June 2016 during a practice run for Smyrna s biennial Great Tennessee Air Show. Design of the playground gives a nod to the Blue Angels, complete with a blue and gold color scheme and a mock tail fin embossed with Kuss No. 6. ....

Former Christy-Houston Foundation executive director Bob Mifflin also joins study group
The Murfreesboro City Council appointed Womack Wednesday to the new Community Investment Study Group along with Bob Mifflin, former banker and executive director of the Christy-Houston Foundation; Amy Farrar, a local attorney; and Eric Meriwether, a financial advisor at Northwestern Mutual.
They will serve alongside Councilman Rick LaLance, who s also an investment adviser and vice president with Pinnacle Financial Partners. The group will offer recommendations on how to use the $302.4 million from last year s sale of MED to Middle Tennessee Electric. Payments to the city are spread over 15 years. ....
