Topeka Rescue Mission discusses $5 million tiny home plan for homeless

A proposal for a $5.7 million “tiny home transitional village” could hold up to 200 beds for the homeless at the former site of Topeka’s tent city.
Each tiny home costs less than $5,000 and could last 20 years, said Barry Feaker, executive director of the Topeka Rescue Mission, when he presented the plan to city council Tuesday night.
The units would be around 64 square feet, have electricity and a heater and air conditioner. He said it’s too early in the process to estimate when something could be completed Tuesday was the first time he presented the full plan to city council. ....

Kayakers who helped bring in the newly developed weir area off the Kansas River pose for a photo before a dedication ceremony Friday afternoon.
Bill Cutler likes to kayak on the Kansas River, but was always cautious of the “danger point” that was the river weir. He would even get out of the water and carry his equipment past the weir.
“They have had people killed at this weir,” said Cutler, who has been involved with the Topeka and Shawnee County Riverfront Authority. ....

Topeka's new sidewalk repair program aims to make up for funding gap

John Davis said he regularly encounters sidewalks in disrepair, especially the brick sidewalks.
“Every brick in the sidewalk goes (in) a different direction,” he said. “They are treacherous to go over. You will be going on a nice sidewalk then all the sudden you hit that red brick, and it is just like going off road.”
Davis lives near the Potwin area but cycles around the city, which makes sidewalks in poor condition especially dangerous.
The city has a sidewalk repair program but only has four projects on the old process and hasn t spent any money yet this year. This prompted the Public Infrastructure Committee to change the 50/50 sidewalk repair program to a cost sharing program at its April 29 meeting. ....
