Lessa was waiting to undergo a kidney transplant. 
“She was a true unsung hero,” said Major Michael Jung, commander of the Salvation Army of New Bedford. Jung said Lessa came to the Salvation Army about nine years ago when her children were little needing assistance.  
Lessa, 56, returned to the Salvation Army in March 2020, but this time as a volunteer with her husband of 21 years, Anthony. 
“They cared about the community. They cared about its people,” Jung said. 
“Every volunteer became friends with her,” said Heather MacFarlaned, of Salvation Army headquarters in Canton. “She had such a personality about her.”
