Back when it originally launched,
Save me Mr Tako was a really cool game that paid homage to the Game Boy. It looked and played the part well, but it was held back from being an easy recommendation by a handful of small annoyances. If you’re curious about my full thoughts on it at the time, you can read them here in my review.
The point is that the game had some issues at launch, and Christophe Galati, the creator, wanted to address them at the time with updates. Unfortunately, the game’s publisher, Nicalis wasn’t willing to pay for it, so it seemed unlikely to happen. This game has charm to spare, but that only goes so far.
Just over two years ago, my colleague Jordan Rudek reviewed this quirky little platformer and enjoyed it overall, but had some criticisms that made me hold off on dropping the hammer on purchasing the game. Since that time, we’ve learned that developer Christophe Galati parted ways with original publisher Nicalis, in part because they just wouldn’t let the man patch his own game because it didn’t sell well enough. Harsh toke, Nicalis! We’ll also since learned that Nicalis isn’t the best company to associate with anyway. Anyway, Save Me Mr. Tako was de-listed from all storefronts following the split, and Mr. Galati partnered up with Limited Run Games to release this enhanced, some might say definitive, edition of the Brave Little Octopus. ....

Save Me, Mr. Tako! Dev On Japan, 'Franglais', And Parting Ways With Nicalis - Feature

In late 2018, controversial indie publisher Nicalis released wunderkind indie developer Christophe Galati’s tribute to the Game Boy Tasukete, Tako-San! / Save Me, Mr. Tako! on Switch to mixed reviews. While some players savored the game’s pea soup-tinted nostalgia, others were frustrated by design choices faithful to an era constrained by primitive technology and still rooted in the arcades.
In the years since the game’s original release, Chris has grown in experience as a developer. But his eagerness to address the concerns of his players evidently caused tension between himself and his former publisher tension that eventually snapped, resulting in the game being delisted from the eShop last year. Like he promised, however, the game is set to return to the eShop on May 5 in the form of a new Definitive Edition thanks to Limited Run Games, who have also indicated a physical release. ....

It s been a bumpy ride since then - with the game even delisted on the eShop, but now, it s bounced back.
The new Definitive Edition will be receiving a Limited Run Games physical release on consoles. More details about the new digital release will also be revealed later down the line.

Hey, I m Christophe Galati (chrisDeneos). 2014 marked the
25th anniversary of the Game Boy. With that in mind, I launched myself into the creation of a game, Tasukete Tako-San: Save me Mr Tako. To me, this game is a way to take what I ve learnt and pay tribute to my influences with my first “real” indie game that I intend to publish.
