THERE are few more pleasurable human experiences than sitting with other people listening to beautiful voices raised in song.
So it was when Canberra’s Luminescence Chamber Choir collaborated with Sydney’s The Australian Voices to perform 11 original compositions created specifically for them, as conductor Amber Evans explained, under the covid-related theme, “Far and Near”.
The songs related both literally and figuratively to this idea so that while some composers focused on human separation, physical and emotional, one reflected on musical issues and others looked to the sea and the sky for inspiration. ....

After singing a tentative version of “Advance Australia Fair” called “Anthem Combined”, the first performer, Joe Geia, an influential singer/songwriter in the development of contemporary indigenous music, hit his stride with three of his own songs. ....

Griffyn finally gets to play its 'Stolen' works

THE story so far… This concert was originally planned to open the new performance space at the revamped Belco Arts (previously known as the Belconnen Arts centre) in May last year. The idea for program was to commission a number of First Nations composers to set words, compiled by poet Melinda Smith from various Parliamentary speeches, for performance by the Griffyns.
The plague put a stop to that and in September a live version was streamed with pre-recorded videos of five of the commissioned works interspersed with interviews and commentary from the composers and performers. ....

Four Indigenous composers and a piano from colonial times

Despite having different cultural backgrounds and experiences Indigenous composers with an Indigenous mentor, and a pianist descended from Anglo-colonial history it is nevertheless possible to create a project that can serve as a focus for unification and strength.
In our instance, the trigger was a relic of the past. Specifically, an historical object made at a time of great significance for Australia: a square piano built around 1770, housed in the keyboard archives of the School of Music at ANU.
Its place of manufacture was Alsace in western Europe, a small body of land that has at times been claimed by Germany, at other times by France. The disputed nature of the territory serves as an ironic parallel to our project. ....
