Navy Capt. Christopher Jason, the commanding officer of Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, was assessing problems on base caused by a rare winter storm when he and Command Master Chief Eric Kinnaman were told that wildlife on the waterfront was struggling. An Army veteran had saved a couple of birds when he noticed a few sea turtles floating listlessly in the waves. ....
Massive volunteer effort rescues nearly 1,000 cold-stunned sea turtles at NAS Corpus Christi February 18 Thanks to a massive effort by volunteers, hundreds of cold-stunned sea turtles were rescued at NAS Corpus Christi. (Navy Capt. Chrisopher Jason) A massive effort to rescue nearly 1,000 cold-stunned sea turtles at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi all started with a base resident wanting to help a couple of injured birds. “I saw these two injured boobies and wanted to help,” retired Army Sgt. William Bellamy told Military Times, explaining how his effort Sunday to rescue the injured sea birds turned into a large-scale operation involving dozens of volunteers rescuing hundreds of threatened sea turtles at a time when many had no heat or water thanks to a huge and deadly winter storm. ....
Reinforcements for helpless and frozen sea turtles arrived from a Navy air base in Texas with kayaks, laundry baskets and pickup trucks to ferry the reptiles to warmer temperatures. ....
Will Bellamy spotted two injured birds along the US Texas coast earlier this week, and the self-described animal lover delivered them to conservationists for care. But the conservationists had a message themselves, he said: watch out for distressed sea turtles. The deadly winter storm that swept across Texas and parts of the south knocked out power and water for millions. It also created a catastrophe for animals statewide – including for sea turtles prone to freezing in frigid waters. Bellamy, an Army and Marine Corps veteran who served in Iraq and Haiti, spotted some turtles on Wednesday with his son Jerome. But he needed help. He alerted Captain Christopher Jason, the commander of Naval Air Station Corpus Christi in southeastern Texas, and his wife, Cheryl Jason. The commander grabbed his kayak, paddled into the cold waves and retrieved a lapful of cold-shocked turtles. ....
