St. Clair Township council has backpedalled on a development charge it authorized in mid-January.
On the recommendation of township treasurer Charles Quenneville, council on Feb. 16 agreed to reconsider a motion that saw non-residential development charges from 2021 to 2025 drop from $20.84 per square metre to $9 per square metre.

During a Jan. 18 meeting, council had supported a motion that saw the township’s non-residential development charge go up by roughly 330 per cent.
Development charges in the municipality from 2021 to 2025 are now set at $6,583 for a single detached and semi-detached residential unit, $6,342 per unit for multiple dwelling units, $3,277 per unit for apartments and $9 per square metre for all non-residential developments, with all charges indexed for inflation.
