DFA looking for ways to help farmers by getting food to the hungry


TAYLOR – Ten years ago a group of farmers reasoned that getting some milk production out of the system would help their prices. They organized voluntary checkoff money from a group of like-minded members to purchase dairy products, formed a cooperative and then partnered with food pantries that could distribute them to people in need.
This month that grassroots group, Dairy Pricing Association, celebrated the milestone of ten years with a donation of 125,937 pounds of non-fat dry milk powder to help ease hunger around the world while also creating upward pressure on the Class 4 milk market – a part of the market that has recently increased in its importance to the farm milk price received by dairy producers. ....

LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - A team of disaster volunteers who arrived in Southwest Louisiana a day after Hurricane Laura, will wrap up their work next week.
Christian Aid Ministries has been cleaning up Westlake for the last 7 and a half months. Westlake Mayor Bob Hardey said they were a God-send.
“In two days, with their help, we were driving every road in Westlake,” recalled Hardey. “Two days after the hurricane.” ....

Bike ride raises funds for beginning farmers
The annual Ride to Farm event will be held June 5. The bicycle ride raises awareness and funds for the Wisconsin School for Beginning Dairy and Livestock Farmers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
The ride will begin and end at Birch Lake Park in Barneveld, Wisconsin. A morning rest stop is planned at Uplands Cheese and Grass Dairy near Dodgeville. A lunch rest stop is planned at Taliesin Riverside Terrace Cafe near Spring Green. And an afternoon rest stop is planned at the Cates Family Farm. All three stops will have locally sourced food for participants. ....

City of Austin Receives 25,000 Articles of Clothing from Global Brand Uniqlo to Help Those in Need


Austin Disaster Relief Network Provides Support Receiving, Sorting, and Distributing the Generous Donation
The global retailer Uniqlo is investing nearly 25,000 articles of new and like-new clothing in support of the Winter Storm Uri response and recovery efforts in Austin. Articles of clothing include shirts, pants, underwear, socks, and wind breakers. In addition to the clothing, donation Uniqlo also contributing 20,000 AIRism protective face masks to the community. The brand is also donating a large portion of like-new clothes that were returned from online purchases.
The City of Austin Homeland Emergency Security Management opened the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) to respond to the weather event. The EOC continues to manage the response and recovery to the severe weather. This includes coordinating water and food resources for distribution.
