Highlighting the difficulties of collecting water during Christian Aid Week appeal


Two local Christian Aid supporters have completed a challenge to see what it is like to fetch water over a long distance.
Last Thursday (May 6), John McArdle (68) and Tony Brookes (73) walked from their homes in Hexham to the water’s edge at Corbridge to fill up containers of water, and then walked back with it.
The annual Christian Aid Week appeal is running from Monday, May 10 until Sunday, May 16 this year.
Hexham Christian Aid Group said Rose Katanu (67) walks five miles every two days in eastern Kenya to fetch 80 litres of water for her six grandchildren in her care.
They said when Rose was young, the “rivers flowed with water and the crops bore fruit, but extreme weather caused by the climate crisis is making it harder and harder to survive the frequent droughts”. ....

A GROUP from North Yorkshire are set to count their steps this month as each take on the 300,000 step challenge.
Step Up for Christian Aid will be taken on by a group of people across Northallerton in a bid to help some of the world s poorest communities protect themselves from both the climate crisis and the pandemic.
The team of 10 has set out to walk a total of at least three-million steps between the month of Christian Aid week from May 10 to 16.
Michael Webster, chair of the local Christian Aid Group, said: In the past our main fund raiser in Christian Aid Week has been the house to house collection. Covid makes this much more difficult, so instead of walking delivering and collecting envelopes our team are ‘Stepping Up’ for Christian Aid. ....
