Settlement reached after Gloriavale leavers took civil action against leaders


Gloriavale was founded by Hopeful Christian more than 50 years ago.
The minute said Public Trust was invited to join the conference at the request of all parties.
Public Trust is a Crown entity whose independence is guaranteed under the Public Trust Act 2001. It was established in 1873 to provide independent and reliable trustee services.
Associate Judge Lester said Public Trust agreed “to perform a reviewing role for a period of 18 months, with regular reports being made to the High Court”.
“The parties are pleased with the outcome which will help to ensure the ongoing future of Gloriavale as a faith-based community,” he said. ....

The infamous Gloriavale document where newcomers sign their lives over to the secretive religious sect has been revealed as a key part of a potentially-landmark legal action against the Christian community s leadership.
The original document, A Declaration of Commitment to Jesus Christ and to the Christian Church and Community at Gloriavale is a foundation piece of ongoing court action, it can now be revealed.
Ex-member John Ready, who was banished from Gloriavale more than three years ago, has launched a civil claim at the High Court. ....

The court battle between Gloriavale leavers and leaders revealed

The isolated West Coast Christian community of Gloriavale has set itself apart from the rest of society for more than 50 years.
The plaintiffs have asked the High Court to give control of the community s assets to the Public Trust because they allege the West Coast community s leaders have failed to provide adequate working and living conditions.
Their lawyer, in a February hearing, alleged the community breeds sexual predators and victims, and members are forced into “slave labour”. The plaintiffs say they are also concerned about the quality of the accommodation, food, and access to medical care and education members receive. ....

Gloriavale documents give insight into community life

The High Court has recently allowed publication of certain documents relating to the case for the first time.
In a five-page position statement on behalf of The Christian Church Community Trust, its trustees and the other defendants, the public gets a rare glimpse into religious expectations and life at Gloriavale.
Those that choose to live in the community agree to abide by certain aspects of religious doctrine including that they should obey the word of the Lord. This includes: not using contraception and gladly receiving all the children that God gives them; marriage being for life, with Christ having commanded that they must never be divorced; that family relationships should be fostered, that families should be able to live and work together and that parents have responsibility to bring up their children; the belief that all things should be held in common and those that have more shou ....
