This production of
Henry V is the eighth of Guildford Shakespeare Company’s (GSC) Zoom shows. I am watching on St. Georges’ Day, Shakespeare’s birthday, normally a day to be out enjoying a sonnet walk. Well, hopefully, next year.
Caroline Devlin directs this online version, with sound design by Matt Eaton, digital design by Beth Mann, costume design by Anett Black and Philip d’Orleans as Fight Director. I have purposefully mentioned the artistic team first as they have done such a fantastic job. The production is cleverly designed, boxes of costumes and props were delivered to each actor’s home in advance of the production. The five actors then perform in their spare rooms, which have been transformed into green screen studios. I cannot begin to imagine how you would choreograph a fight between characters in completely different locations! ....

A somewhat tired and hit-and-miss adaptation of the festive favourite is propped up by gleeful turns from our two national treasures
Larger-than-life: Brian Blessed
There are enough Christmas Carols afoot to keep a critic busy year round. I’m not jaded yet. If I could, for instance, get to Liverpool Playhouse (Tier 2) to see Gemma Bodinetz’s swansong show as artistic director, I would. There’s even a version recorded at Dickens’ old Holborn home on Doughty Street that I’ll watch this week, and I hope to revisit my local production in Chipping Norton, starring David Bradley, for it was so damned good. Standing out from the crowd, though, is a must. ....

Brian Blessed in A Christmas Carol
One has to find the positives wherever they arise, but even more so than usual in 2020: there were about 90 attendees to the Zoom meeting I attended, which served as the platform on which this online production of
A Christmas Carol took place. It’s a larger group than could otherwise be accommodated at Jermyn Street Theatre in person – not having taken social distancing measures into account.
It may be online, but aside from the occasional reference to contemporary events, in which Scrooge’s nephew Fred (Lucy Pearson) and his folks must observe the rule of six, thus preventing a gathering of twenty or more as per their custom on Christmas Day, this is very much ....
