By Gabriel Granillo 5/28/2021 at 12:30am Klamath Marsh Last year the Oregon Water Futures Project, in partnership with Unite Oregon, the Chinook Indian Nation, and other organizations, conducted a series of water-focused conversations with Native, Black, Latinx, and migrant communities around the state to learn about their cultural connections to water and their concerns when it comes to water education, access, and advocacy. And earlier this week OWF released a report of their findings from those conversations to Oregon policy- and decision-makers. ....
Picture a van screeching into the parking lot of Devil’s Punch Bowl on the Oregon coast. Four men jump out of the van and run full speed carrying spotting scopes to an ideal spot to look at the ocean, as local birder Noah Strycker describes it to Eugene Weekly. “And then just shouting out bird names, ‘wandering tattle.’ ‘Got it!’” he says. “I imagine people are saying, ‘What is happening?’” But that’s what the typical stop was like as Strycker and three other birders broke Oregon’s Big Day record. The four identified 228 bird species in 24 hours, which is nine more than the 2007 record set by Strycker and three other birders. Preparing for a Big Day, when birders try to identify as many birds as possible during a 24-hour period, takes more than just planning a route, though. It takes scouting out areas to ensure you can maximize the number of birds identified at a certain stop. ....
Crews may begin prescribed burns in two areas over the week of May 3, weather conditions permitting. Posted: Apr 30, 2021 5:13 PM Posted By: Jamie Parfitt CHILOQUIN, Ore. The U.S. Forest Service and partner agencies are preparing for several large prescribed burns in the Fremont-Winema National Forest covering almost 5,000 acres. The burns may begin over the week of May 3, forestry officials said. Two areas have been identified as sites of the burns. The LoMi prescribed burn is set for 800 acres near Klamath Marsh, off the Silver Lake Highway. The North 2 prescribed burn, estimated at roughly 4,200 acres, is located seven miles northeast of Chiloquin. Officials said that it is located near the burn scar of the Two Four Two Fire from September. ....
