By Solomon Crenshaw Jr. For The Birmingham Times Dr. Nathaniel Brooks, pastor of Greater St. John Baptist Church in Powderly, knows what impact tobacco products can have on the African-American community and he warns about the dangers. “Menthol and smoking menthol … is a form of a demon that has created so much corruption, and it’s in a form of addiction,” he said. “Studies have even shown how second-hand menthol smoke is detrimental to kids in a household.” Brooks will participate in No Menthol Sunday, an international observance day led by The Center for Black Health & Equity that engages faith leaders and their communities in a discussion about how to improve health outcomes for African Americans. ....

(contributed) Throughout its 25 years, the Office of Community Outreach & Engagement at the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB has relied on community partners to form strategies that reach previously overlooked groups. Two of the newest members of the Community Advisory Board are serving as guides to help address health disparities among Alabama’s Latino populations. Board members Vanessa Vargas and Jean Hernandez are partners in expanding outreach efforts to reach a Spanish-speaking audience through community collaboration and culturally relevant, inclusive messaging. ....
By Joseph D. Bryant UAB News December begins a yearlong commemoration marking the 25th anniversary of the Office of Community Outreach and Engagement at the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB. Since its creation in 1995, the office has dedicated itself to increasing cancer education and awareness in medically underserved populations and addressing health disparities throughout Alabama and beyond. A series of public virtual activities is planned throughout 2021 to mark the office’s landmark year and showcase the history of the office and how it has evolved to positively impact communities in the future. The first event is a virtual “Fireside Chat” featuring pioneers of the office, including Edward Partridge, M.D., former director of the Cancer Center, who will discuss the earliest days of outreach initiatives. ....
