Mississippi surpassing 5,000 COVID-19 deaths on Wednesday was a grim reminder of how the state has fared as it continues to see elevated levels of the virus.
Medical experts across the nation and in the state warned after the surge in the summer that another could come in fall and winter months as flu season began, which has been playing out since the end of November.
Infection levels have been elevated for the past several weeks, which state medical leaders have largely attributed to people gathering for the holidays. According to data from the Mississippi State Department of Health, December was the deadliest month on record for the state since the pandemic began with 983 deaths being recorded in that month alone. ....
