Ford - one of the Brighton Area School District’s 12 social-emotional-learning dogs — is resting at home after surgery last month for a torn ligament, which is equivalent to an ACL tear in his knee. The surgery was performed by Oakland Veterinary Referral Services in Bloomfield Twp., which donated the surgical procedure and waived all related charges.
It was for that reason that the Brighton Board of Education named the veterinary practice a “Shining Star” at its March 22nd meeting and accepted the donation of $3,900 in veterinary services. Karen Storey, whose idea it was to start the “Pack of Dogs” program and who is its founder, says, “They jumped right on board to help Ford out. They knew first-hand the value that our dogs bring to the children’s and staff’s social and emotional well-being.” Storey adds that Dr. Kristin Wilson of the Arbor ....

Michigan parents push for more in-person learning ahead of March 1 target date

Not every school district in Metro Detroit are ready to do that.
A group of parents spoke with Local 4 about what they think is best for their children. They acknowledged that Whitmer wanting to return to in-person learning by March 1 was a step in the right direction, but they still want her to do more.
“Giving that advice and that guidance, is definitely a great stride from where we were a few months ago,” said Jessica Mathiak, a parent of a Huron Valley Schools student. “We’d like to see more strength in that, rather than just a kind request to get our schools back and open full time and face-to-face.” ....

TROY Cornelius Godfrey is the Troy School District’s new supervisor of educational equity, inclusion and community relationships.
District officials said they are excited to welcome Godfrey, who they said has spent both his career and his personal life as an advocate for inclusion, to the new position within the district.
“We are very excited to bring Mr. Godfrey’s experience and passion,” Christine DiPilato, the assistant superintendent of secondary instruction, said in a statement.
Godfrey comes to Troy from the Clarkston Community Schools district, where he served as a special education teacher and in a leadership role in the district’s equity, inclusion and social justice work. District officials said Godfrey was a leading partner of the CCS Equity Taskforce, working to increase the cultural competence of instructional staff and cultural responsiveness of curriculum, ....
